  5. Cheap Party Decorating Ideas – Top 10 craft / DIY ideas to fill your party venue

April 15, 2015 by Faffy Tea

At Faffy Tea, we always try and keep the budgets for our parties as small as possible. Sometimes it’s very expensive to buy or make enough decorations to fill a large room or venue. Even balloons are expensive these days, typically £1-£3 for 10 balloons, especially if you need a certain colour scheme.

Here are our top 10 tips for the cheapest DIY and craft decorating ideas – the best ways we have found for filling large party venues with low cost or free craft supplies.

Paper Chains 1. Paper Chains – for covering lots of wall or ceiling space

You would be surprised just how much little scraps of paper go a long way if they are made into paper chains.

Use magazines, newspapers, bits and pieces from a craft box, brown paper, even printer paper!

You can also buy bundles of cheap coloured paper from the children’s craft sections.

DIY Giant Party Swirls2. Giant Spirals – for filling big empty spaces

If you can find some cheap A3 card (or larger) from a pound store, cut out a circle, and then cut a spiral going inwards.

Hang the swirl up from the centre of the circle and “ta-dah” a giant swirl decoration!

The kids can help make these too.

Fern Garland DIY Party3. Foliage – for free, rustic decorations

If you’re lucky enough to have a garden, or a nearby outdoor space such as a woodland, go and see if there is anything you can use for indoor party decorations.

    • Twigs can be spray painted and used in a vase
    • Leaves or ferns can be tied on to twine for bunting
    • Branches, if pliable enough, can be bent into hearts or wreaths for hanging on walls

Book Pages for Party Decorations4. Book Pages – for shabby chic weddings, baby showers & hen parties!

If you have books that you no longer want, the pages can be used in loads of ways to create vintage, shabby chic or literature themed party decorations

Pages can be hung like bunting (as they are or cut into flag shapes), stuck together to create a collaged table runner, or even use as a wall backdrop for the buffet table. Very “Alice in Wonderland“!

Cheap Party Decorations5. Drinking Straws – for the easiest and longest DIY garlands

Thread string through cheap plastic drinking straws to create metres and metres of coloured garlands.

Criss cross them when hanging up to create a luxurious and colourful effect.

You can even used them to make shapes such as flags and stars. Take a look on Pinterest for some more inspiration.

Wrapping Paper6. Wrapping Paper – for the cheapest papercrafts of all

From a cheap card store (e.g. Card Factory) or supermarket, wrapping paper can be cheaper than rolls of white paper, and much more decorative.

These thin, cheap wrapping papers can be used for as a very inexpensive table runner or wall backdrop for decorating your party.

    Pretty!

Free Party Decorations7. Toys – for decorating with what you already have!

Instead of spending money buying new decorations, why not use things that you already have?

String up some toys that you or your kids already have to make a “temporary” garland or even a ‘chandelier’.

Plastic toy soldiers, dinosaurs, action men, my little pony, cowboys… you can base the whole party theme around these toys too.

DIY Cheap Party Decoration8. Junk – for ‘upcycled’ party decorations

For a couple of months before a party, save some of the junk that you would otherwise throw away or recycle:

    • Egg carton can be used to make flower garlands
    • Any glass jars or jam jars can hold tea lights or paper flowers or foliage for a pretty display
    • Toilet rolls can be made into favour boxes (see here), garlands, crown party hats (see here)

Paper Plate Party Decorations9. Paper Plates – for getting creative

For leftover paper plates from your last party, or for cheap Pound store plates, you can use the plates’ circle shape for some lovely easy DIY decorations.

Make buttons for a shabby chic party (see example)
Make jellyfish for a sea, mermaid or pirate party (see how)
Make huge flowers for the wall (see how)
Make a hungry caterpillar garland (see example)
